 XIX International Environmental Forum "Baltic Sea Day"

22-23 March 2018, Saint-Petersburg, Russia

XIX International Environmental Forum "Baltic Sea Day" was traditionally held in St. Petersburg, March 22 -23, 2018. The Forum was dedicated to the memory of its founder, Leonid Korovin. It was held for the first time on the site of the Expoforum in parallel with the exhibition "Ecology in Big City".

More than 500 delegates took part in the event. There are about 100 foreign participants among them from the countries of the Baltic Sea region, as well as Belarus, France and Switzerland.

The children's greeting from the environmental center of SUE "Vodokanal of St. Petersburg" became a traditional decoration of the Forum. With greeting words also spoke:

• Chief Federal Inspector Viktor Minenko - from the Office of the Plenipotentiary Representative to the President of the Russian Federation

• Vice-Governor Mikhail Kucheryavy - from the Government of St. Petersburg

• Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Natural Resources of the Leningrad Region - Konstantin Ostrikov

• Deputy chief - Vasily Fedorov - from the Department of Rosprirodnadzor for the North-West Federal District

• Jørgen Pettersson - President of the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference

The plenary session was devoted to the results of the Brussels Ministerial Session HELCOM (March 6, 2018). A high-level panel discussion was organized within the framework of the Forum for the first time and was moderated by Nuritdin Inamov, Director of the Department for International Cooperation of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia, participants - Matiaz Malgaj, Vice-Chairman of HELCOM; Hannele Pokka, Ministry of the Environment of Finland; Natalia Tretiakova, Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation; Monika Stankiewicz, Executive Secretary of HELCOM.

At the end of the Plenary session of the XIX International Environmental Forum an award ceremony for personal contributions to the development of cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region (Non–governmental V.I. Vernadskiy Ecological Fund) was held. The orders were awarded to:

1) Executive Secretary of HELCOM - Monika Stankiewicz

2) Vice-chairman of the Maritime Group (HELCOM) - Natalia Kutaeva

3) Coordinator of joint environmental projects between Russia and Finland - Ljudmila Vesikko

4) Director of the Department of Technological Development and Environmental Protection of SUE Vodokanal of St. Petersburg - Olga Rublevskaya

5) Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Nature Use, Environmental Protection and Ecological Safety of St. Petersburg - Ivan Serebritsky. 

In the frame of 9 sectional sessions the participants discussed a wide range of environmental issues: role of municipalities in implementation of the HELCOM BSAP, URBAN ECOCLUSTER project, the issues of sustainable water management, including the ecosystem approach in river basin management, instruments of marine spatial planning, environmental education and awareness, and others.

Also within the framework of the Forum, a round table Nord Stream 2 was held, dedicated to a major infrastructure project, which is of great public interest. On the second day of the Forum, the interim results of the ENVISUM Project (Impacts from ship emissions and possibilities of collaboration in the BSR) were presented to all stakeholders and a discussion was held, the main topic of which was discussion of opportunities for further development of cooperation in the field of "clean shipping ".

Great interest among the participants of the Forum was caused by the business training on marine spatial planning.

The result of Baltic Sea Day forum is the Resolutions of the round tables, which are subsequently sent to the appropriate authorities to support the adoption of effective decisions aimed at improving the environmental condition of the Baltic Sea.
